This page is intended for use by aquatics program providers.  It features resources and links to enable your program to prevent and reduce drowning in your community.  Included is a downloadable community outreach program that can be taken to local elementary schools to introduce water safety and promote your programs. By adding your logo on each of the resource materials, you can position your agency as a valuable water safety resource to your community. Our goal is to reach as many communities as possible with water safety information and education.

Alert from the World Waterpark Association (WWA)

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act -- this new law requires safety improvements at all public pools and spas before December 19, 2008. The most important items waterpark owners and operators need know and act on are:

  • Inspect and replace all drain covers with anti-entrapment covers that have ASME/ANSI A112.19.8.2 and the Maximum Flow Rate stenciled on the cover, demonstrating that the cover complies with the standard and the federal law.
  • All drain covers must comply with this standard. Only anti-entrapment covers will be allowed in commerce from that date.
  • If there are any single drains directly linked to suction, plan to renovate to have hydraulically-balanced dual drains spaced at least 3 feet apart. Alternatively, consider renovating the hydraulic system to remove all direct suction using gravity systems.
  • Any pool or spa that has a single main drain will have to have an additional level of protection installed and operational. The additional levels of protection may include one of the options listed below:
       a. Safety vacuum release system
       b. Suction-limiting vent system
       c. Gravity drainage system
       d. Automatic pump shut off system
       e. Drain disablement
       f. Other systems approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

If your facility's pools and spas were configured to comply with ANSI/APSP-7 "American National Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance in Swimming Pools, Wading Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs, and Catch Basins," they will comply with each of the mandatory requirements listed above.
